Work reported herein was conducted at the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology research program supported in part by the Advanced Research Projects Agency of the Department of Defense and monitored by the Office of Naval Research under Contract Number N00014-70-A-0362-0005.en
The intent of this paper is to convey one idea central to the structure of a natural language parser currently under development, the notion of wait-and-see strategies. This notion will hopefully allow the recognition of the structure of natural language input by a process that is deterministic and "backupless", that can have strong expectations but still be immediately responsive to the actual structure of the input. The notion is also discussed as a paradigm for recognition processes in general.en
